Meet The Doctors

Dr. Jerome Lewis, D.C. is a Chiropractor at River Oaks

Dr. M. Jerome Lewis came to the River Oaks location of The Joint Chiropractic in 2023, where he enjoys the role of clinic director in the Houston area and does the work he finds so fulfilling.

“I absolutely love being a Doctor of Chiropractic,” he says. “It is a passion of mine to educate and teach patients the value of treating the whole patient and not just a ‘symptom’ walking into the clinic. I have always thought the ‘why’ is so much more important than the ‘what.’ It enables me to explain why their symptoms developed and the step-by-step approach to rebuild the neuromusculoskeletal system and alleviate the symptoms by addressing the cause.”

Dr. J., as his patients sometimes call him, is pleased to be a part of the River Oaks practice. “I appreciate the opportunity to build relationships with patients from many different cultures and languages and serve each of them to the best of my talents and abilities,” he says.

Originally from Houston, Dr. Lewis attended Strake Jesuit College Preparatory School. He graduated from Georgetown Preparatory School in Rockville, Md., where he was introduced to a Doctor of Chiropractic when his father became a patient following two failed back surgeries. “I was amazed that after being bedridden and in chronic pain for 30 days, he was back playing golf with me within three months,” he says.

Dr. Lewis returned to Texas to study at the University of Houston and earned a Doctorate at Texas Chiropractic College. He worked in Missouri City and Sugar Land for 38 years before joining the team at River Oaks.

“I didn’t really choose chiropractic; I believe chiropractic chose me,” he says. “It just made so much sense and I have never looked back on the decision. I have always loved treating patients, but I found the business of running my own clinic took me away from treating patients. The Joint offers me the ability to do what I love – treating and educating patients to regain their health and lead a higher quality of life!”

Dr. Lewis’ son, Austin, is an internal medicine physician and his daughter-in-law, Kelly Fuller Lewis, is a pediatrician in Flower Mound, Texas. Dr. Lewis has two dogs, a Maltese named Chloe and a miniature goldendoodle named Coco.

In his free time he loves being outdoors – golfing, fishing, hunting, and shooting sporting clay. Dr. Lewis has traveled abroad to such European countries as France and Italy, and he takes a trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico every year. Dr. Lewis takes refuge from the hustle and bustle of Houston at his lake house in East Texas near Nacogdoches. Among his most memorable professional experiences was the chance to serve as the team chiropractor for the Houston Rockets in the NBA and the Houston Texans in the NFL. “It enabled me to meet so many fabulous athletes who I have remained friends with over the years,” he says. “I went with Coach Rudy Tomjonovich to the Sydney Olympics in 2000, meeting the team in Maui – quite an adventure. Rudy fondly called me Dr. Crack!”

In Case You Didn’t Know

He is a fan of Community Coffee’s New Orleans Blend with chicory and he has a sweet tooth for chocolate chip cookies and pastries. He also loves steak, seafood, and sushi.

If he could plan the ideal dinner party with famous guests, Dr. Lewis would bring together four athletes he’s already met: Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Tom Brady, and Tiger Woods. “Even though I have spoken to them several times, I would love an evening to find out what it took to be ‘the best,’” he says. “Is it God-given talent or hard work? Most likely it’s a big combination of both!”

The greatest experience of Dr. Lewis’ life was the birth of his son. “It is an absolute miracle to watch a life being born into the world and know that I assisted in creating this unique human being,” he says. “We are extremely close, see each other regularly, and have taken father-son golf trips to some of the most famous courses in the world. I’m thrilled that I’ve been able to play a part in his desire to become a medical doctor by introducing him to some of the finest orthopedic surgeons in Houston, as well as the privilege to be in locker rooms with so many superstar athletes.”

In addition to The Bible, Dr. Lewis likes the book Love and Respect by Emerson Eggerich and The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman.

Some of the best advice Dr. Lewis ever received was from Gus Coupe, his high school golf coach: “Everyone in life must choose one of two paths to travel – the path of dedication or the path of regret. The path of dedication is much less painful than that of regret.”

For his best advice to others he takes a quote from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Dr. Lewis suggests you find out what you would love to do with your life, even if you didn’t get paid to do it. “That’s your passion,” he says. “Go do that, and find out how to make a living at it. If you do, work will never be work! I found mine. I always loved Mondays, because I got to see patients again and help people get better! I love chiropractic!”
