Chiropractic Care for Runners
By Paul Rothbart
Life in general can be tough on the body and exercise is one of the activities that can be the hardest. While very important to overall health, the body must be cared for to keep it strong and able to stand the rigors of exercise. Running is one of the most effective and popular forms of exercise. It's great for cardio, burns lots of calories, and keeps the legs nicely toned. It can also be done competitively for those who want to race. But it does take a toll. Regular chiropractic care can help runners avoid injury and keep them logging those miles.
Problems Running Can Cause
With each and every step, a runner's feet come down onto the running surface with considerable force. Step after step, mile after mile, that force causes a lot of stress. The stress is not limited to the feet. It affects the ankles, the lower legs, the knees, all the way up through the hips and lower back. This can cause pain and often "misalignment" in any of those joints. Joints that are out of adjustment don't have full range of motion, don't allow you to run with your best form, and they hurt. Sometimes badly.
How to Reduce Risk of Problems
There are things runners can do to reduce the detrimental effects of stress on the body. Proper footwear is vital. Dedicated running shoes should be worn. They should have solid support for the arches and sufficient padding to absorb some of the shock of the feet slamming down. Good running shoes have a sturdy sole with flexibility for full range of motion and they should fit properly. Shoes that are too big or too small cause blisters and other problems. Always warm up before a run. Light stretching and calisthenics followed by a short jog at a slower pace are recommended. At the conclusion of a run, take some time to cool down by walking slowly and breathing deeply.
How a Chiropractor Can Help
Despite taking the necessary steps to protect themselves, the lower bodies of runners still experience stress. Misalignments are always possible and they are harmful. By regularly visiting a chiropractor, the joints and spine can be adjusted and aligned to keep the body functioning at its best. Chiropractic care can reduce pain and may help you reach your full potential as a runner.
