Riding A Bicycle Is Not Just For Kids

By Tom Herrin

How long has it been since you last rode a bicycle?  Sometimes you may feel like you are too busy, or you are beyond that sort of thing.  With so many schedules that are packed full of things we need to do each day, it is hard.  You may be like so many others who are looking for some way of getting more exercise.  We all try to maximize our time.  Maybe an exercise group or class is your thing.  Maybe you are a jogger.  If you are like so many of us, you may have a hard time actually enjoying physical activity.  This is probably because of the time issue again.  It doesn’t have to be that way.

A Bicycle Can Represent Freedom

If you decide to take up bike riding, you are sure to notice some things you had forgotten.  The first one is how hard the seat is.  Find a wide seat with more cushion.  It helps.  The next thing you will notice is how much freedom you feel when riding.  It can be a pretty unrestricted feeling.  You have greater mobility than you do in a car because of the size and weight of the bike. You have greater speed with less effort than jogging.  It can give you a feeling of confidence.

You Can Determine Your Own Conditioning

When riding a bike, you will need to do a little work.  With some simple goal setting, you can achieve almost anything you want.  You can ride for time or distance or both.  Adding a little distance every few times you ride can be a pretty rewarding feeling.  You can build endurance and burn calories at the same time.  When I was trying to lose a little weight, I found that if I rode four times per week, I could lose.  Of course, I had to eat reasonably, as well.

A Few More Benefits

If you are concerned about injuries when exercising, bike riding is pretty low impact.  There is no pounding of your feet on anything.  It can also help strengthen bones and improve coordination.  No small thing is that it can be a great stress reliever.  You can do it alone or with family or friends, so it can be social or allow you the chance to collect your thoughts.  This may be one activity that you just thought you outgrew.  Doing it as an adult may give you a whole different perspective and good exercise.  Try it out and see for yourself.
