Nap Time May Build Health
By Tom Herrin
The idea that people need to work hard to get ahead is not new. In the United States, people often assume they need to put in extra time in order to move up in whatever they do. They feel that the way to do that successfully may be to work long hours. That often means that they get up early and work late. That also may mean that they will give up some of their sleep time. The result of this may be reflected in their mental, physical, and emotional health. When this becomes a habit, people may suffer from the effects of this lack of sleep. One good way to counter these effects may be to take a nap. It may do some great things in the way of improving health.
It May Help Manage Weight
Poor sleep habits may be part of what makes some people have difficulty controlling their appetites. According to a Stanford University study, lack of sleep may cause an increase in the production of the hormone gherkin. This makes people want to eat more. This shortness of sleep also may reduce the production of the hormone leptin. This lets people know when they are full. The combination can result in people who fail to get enough sleep having trouble preventing themselves from overeating. A nap may put this all in check.
It May Help Avoid Diabetes
Those who may be at risk of developing diabetes may also be more in need of proper sleep than others. In a study from the University of Chicago, researchers found that men who were otherwise healthy were limited to 4.5 hours of sleep for four days had an increased amount of fatty acids in their blood. This is believed to contribute to a rise in blood sugar. This is in comparison to when these same men slept for 8.5 hours per night. It is believed that these things can correct themselves with adequate sleep. A nap may fill the gaps.
It May Help the Skin
Most of us have seen someone who is sleep-deprived and looked it. The skin is often more aged in appearance. When people get the sleep they need, they can expect to have greater elasticity in their skin, which always gives a younger appearance. We have all heard of people needing their beauty rest. The fact is that if naps are taken at the right time and place, we may expect to look younger and healthier.
