Are You Trying to Be Carbless?

By Tom Herrin

For those who are making every effort to make major changes to their diet, the notion of cutting carbs seems to be a big thing.  It is certainly a good way to address some health issues that many are experiencing and may work toward shifting the way the body burns fuel.  While there are some good things that can come from it, the idea of cutting carbs must be met with adequate understanding of the role of carbs in the body.  If someone plunges into it with too much enthusiasm and not enough knowledge, they could find themselves in trouble.  Their health could actually suffer, and that is never the desired outcome.

Getting Rid of Some Carbs May Be Wise

There are different kinds of carbs.  Those that come from sugar can have a disastrous effect on health.  No doubt, many people overindulge in these, and it may contribute to some of the health issues today that involve blood sugar.  When people consume these foods, it is too easy to leave out the good foods.  It has been suggested that women should not take in more than 100 calories per day from these foods and men should not have more than 150 calories per day.  Exercising a little self-discipline here can be a big help.

Eating the Right Carbs Can Build Health

While some carbs are not so good, others can support health.  They are necessary to fuel the body and help the muscles to function as they should.  These carbs come from foods such as fruits, vegetables, and healthy grains.  It could be said that people may be far less likely to harm themselves by eating lots of these.  On the other hand, if people fail to consume enough carbs, their body may begin to use muscle for fuel.  When this happens, they will lose lean muscle mass.  This is what happens during starvation.

Strive for the Best Diet

When we seek to improve our diets, we have to make a commitment to go for whatever is the best available.  This may mean accepting some new ideas with the maximum amount of information we can gather.  As we try to stay current and educate ourselves about nutrition, we are sure to grow.  In reality, we should want the best possible diet that can produce the best results.  It is not that difficult, it just takes planning.
