Don't Hurt Your Back While Exercising

By Paul Rothbart

The importance of exercise to good health is a well-known fact. It helps maintain a healthy physique, helps control blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol, and can also boost mental health. As with anything, you can overdo it with exercise. There are also proper ways to work out. Failure to overlook these warnings can result in pain and injury. One of the most vulnerable parts of the body is the back. Back pain and problems are very common and can happen because of the type of work you do or from lack of exercise. Too much working out without observing proper methods can also hurt the back.

Warm-Ups and Form

Just jumping in and engaging in any type of exercise is asking for trouble. Muscles that are cold and tight are not ready for strenuous activity. Stretching should always be the first thing you do before exercise. Back muscles should be stretched thoroughly as they bear at least some of the stress in pretty much any activity. Light calisthenics such as jumping, a short brisk walk, or jogging in place should be next. This gets the blood flowing into muscles and tendons, preparing them for exercise. No matter what kind of workout you choose, proper form is essential. Keep your back straight and use your legs for heavy lifts. Move carefully through any motions and maintain proper posture throughout the workout.

Know When to Rest

Exercise can be addictive and some people don't know when to stop and rest. Increases in strength, endurance, and other physical attributes occur in between workouts when the body is resting. Pushing beyond your current capabilities is a sure way to cause pain and injuries. When the limbs get tired, you tend to put more of the load on the back. This can cause compressed vertebrae that will be painful and take you out of the game. Know your limits and stop when your body has had enough. The next session is not that far off.

See a Chiropractor

When it comes to avoiding back pain, chiropractic care can be extremely helpful. Should you have subluxations or any other problems in the spine or joints, a chiropractic examination will find them. They can then be adjusted with a series of manipulations. With your spine back in line, the pain can be eased and leave you ready for your next workout. Seeing a chiropractor regularly is a good idea for people who train.

It is important to exercise but doing it improperly can hurt your back. Be sure to warm up, use proper form, and not overdo it. Consider a visit to The Joint Chiropractic. No appointment is needed. The chiropractor may be one of the best ways to work out without back pain.
