Choosing a Healthy Breakfast to Start Your Day

By Brandi Swieter

Most people have learned the importance of starting out the day with breakfast. What some fail to realize, however, is that the breakfast in question should be a healthy one. Grabbing a Pop-Tart on the way out the door may get the systems started so calories can burn, but it won’t offer much more of a benefit than that. People need to choose a healthy breakfast to start the day out right. It will also help set the tone for a healthier day overall.

Oatmeal

Instead of cereal, choose oatmeal for a healthy boost to the heart. Though the sugary packets of pre-made oatmeal with fake fruit and cream won’t suffice, homemade oatmeal with a bit of raw honey and cinnamon would do the trick. Due to the fiber involved, which helps lower cholesterol, this heart-healthy choice is an excellent solution to breakfast.

Bananas

A fruit is an ideal option for breakfast because it can be eaten on the go. Bananas are one of the best choices because there are no juices spilling out as there tends to be with most fruit choices. Bananas also contain plenty of potassium and vitamins which give a boost in energy, making them the perfect start to the morning. Grab one out the door or add it to a fast smoothie for a special treat.

Grapefruit

Another fruit option, grapefruit is said to provide a perfect start to the day due to its weight loss capabilities. Eating just half of a grapefruit before a meal can help people slim down quickly. It’s very hydrating for the body and has antioxidants that boost the immune system. Pair it with an egg for the added protein for a truly well-rounded meal.

Eggs

With numerous ways to cook them, eggs are an excellent choice for adults and children alike. Kids tend to enjoy them scrambled. Adults often eat them sunny side up or over easy (or medium or hard, depending on how well they liked their yolk cooked). Vitamin D, as well as other nutrients and protein, make up eggs. They offer a wonderful source of nutrition while being easy to cook. It can take just a few minutes to cook an egg, or a bit longer depending on what you’re making. To avoid consuming too much cholesterol, people can skip the yolks and enjoy egg whites only.

Choosing the right foods is always important, starting from breakfast time. A quick and easy snack on-the-go may seem like a good solution, but even healthy choices come in on-the-go forms. A banana, for instance, would be a far better option than a Pop-Tart filled with nothing but sugar. Your body and mind will thank you for a healthy start.
