5 Simple Steps for a Healthier Fall Season

By Brandi Swieter

Fall weather starts turning cold. Students are all back in school. The stress of the upcoming holidays takes over. All of this combined makes it easy for people to develop fall illnesses that leave them cooped up inside for days or longer. With a few simple steps, people can experience a healthier fall season that doesn’t leave them bed-bound.

Eat More Than Pumpkin Pie

Many people purchase pumpkins to carve and decorate, but they don’t actually eat the pumpkins they buy. Instead, consumers tend to buy pumpkin puree from the store that contains sugar and other ingredients to make pumpkin pie. Pumpkin and its seeds can be quite healthy if made right. Anyone looking to boost their health should try to create some pumpkin recipes from scratch instead of using store-bought options.

Drink Lots of Water

Staying hydrated is one way to help keep sickness away. The body needs adequate water intake if it’s going to be strong and well enough to fight off infection. As fall approaches, everyone should be drinking at least half their weight in water, if not a little more, to stay well-hydrated and free from illness.

Spend Time Outdoors

It isn’t ideal to be kept cooped up inside all season long. Being outside in the sunlight provides people with the Vitamin D they need to stay healthy. As long as people bundle up and wear appropriate clothing to stay warm, being outdoors is fine to do any time of year. Those who don’t wear proper attire are more likely to get sick, so always be sure to wear a jacket, hat, gloves, and weatherproof footwear.

Exercise Often

Getting enough exercise is one way to stay healthy. Many people tend to start working out less when the fall season arrives because they get busy with holiday planning and events and don’t find as much time to be outside. Spending more time outdoors is necessary, though, as is exercising; it will keep illness at bay and ensure a strong mind and body.

Eat Plenty of Fruits and Veggies

While you’re eating the pumpkin seeds, also think about other healthy dishes to make. Fruits and veggies need to be on the menu each day for those who want to avoid illness. These foods contain large amounts of vitamins and nutrients necessary for keeping the body healthy. It’s hard to ward off sickness without consuming them.

Staying healthy should always be the goal no matter the time of year. As fall approaches, however, and the changing weather starts to take a toll on the body, people need to be especially cautious of how to keep themselves healthy and well. Follow these tips for doing so and experience a better fall season that you can enjoy illness-free.
