The Power of Pumpkin

By Brandi Swieter

Pumpkin is popular this time of year, with many available in stores and even sold from local farmers along the street. The seeds make great snacks while the pumpkin itself can be pureed into countless delectable dishes fit for not just Halloween but also Thanksgiving. There's a lot of power to pumpkin due to the health benefits it brings.

Perfect for Weight Loss

Because a full cup of pumpkin contains just 49 calories, it's the perfect food for weight loss. People can add it to recipes without worry and snack on the seeds without being afraid of overeating. Pumpkin fills people up due to the fiber and nutrients within yet is low in calories so it won't break a diet. It's the ideal solution.

Vitamin A Galore

Pumpkin doesn't just contain Vitamin A. It has an impressive amount of the nutrient. People can expect Vitamin A galore from consuming pumpkin, with nearly 245 percent of the recommended daily value in a single serving. The vitamin is ideal for improving eyesight, boosting immune health, and helping vital organs function.

Plenty of Vitamin C

Vitamin C is also plentiful in pumpkin. It only provides 19 percent of the recommended daily value, however. This is still an impressive amount, giving a boost to the immune system and fighting off infection. Anyone wanting to stay sickness-free this fall should add pumpkin to their diet. With the help of this fruit-like vegetable plus other vitamin-rich foods, a boost in immunity is possible.

Energy Boost from Potassium

Potassium helps curb muscle fatigue and also counteracts the effect of sodium. It is also known to give a boost in energy, making it worthwhile to consume. Pumpkin can give people an energy boost and make them feel better overall due to the potassium and other nutrients within it. It contains 16 percent of the recommended daily intake.

Antioxidants to Fight Disease

Pumpkin contains plenty of antioxidants. These work to fight disease and keep free radicals from causing harm within the body. Beta-carotene and alpha-carotene are some of the most commonly found options from a pumpkin. They even help to protect the skin, making it ideal for part of the fall and winter skincare routine.

Enjoy pumpkin as often as possible by adding it to dishes and snacking on the seeds. Lots of health benefits exist that make consuming pumpkin regularly worthwhile. Homemade versions are of course much healthier than store-bought concoctions as well. Grab a pumpkin and get carving and scooping to reap the benefits.
