The Correlation Between Shoes and the Spine

Shoes are much more than an accessory to add to your outfit. Sure, the perfect pair may make your outfit look great, but are they helping your spinal health? There's a major correlation between shoes and the spine and picking the right pair should be about your well-being, not how good you look in them.

Heel Height and Back Pain

The higher the heel, the more severe the back pain may be. People who wear high heels often do so for the style and added height. They'll often suffer through the pain to get the results they desire. Wearing a pair of shoes that keeps the foot bent and ankle raised throws off the spine tremendously. You'll be activating different muscle groups that aren't used to the activity. An ache may start in your ankle but can eventually travel to your back and even neck because of this. 

An Unstable Posture

Walking barefoot or in low-heeled shoes allows you to employ correct posture more easily. High heels create an unstable posture as you attempt to balance yourself on a slanted shoe that your body is not intended for. It will be more difficult on your spine as you attempt to stay upright and walk without tripping over yourself.

Ground Reaction Force

The ground puts a lot of pressure on the body. Each step you take has your foot hitting the ground and taking in the shock of that movement and hardness. A high heel or heavy boot creates a stronger ground reaction force. You're often hitting the ground harder because you're trying to keep your balance in shoes like these. This puts more pressure on the legs, spine, and neck, resulting in pain.

How to Help Yourself

Avoid wearing high heels and heavy boots if you can help it. Stick with comfortable shoes that leave you feeling steady on your feet. You also want to wear a pair that fits well. They should not be too large to have you tripping over them nor too small to cause you pain from the start.

The shoes you choose can have a significant impact on your spinal health. The wrong pair can cause serious damage while the right pair will provide the support and comfort you need to maintain your spine's structure. Use careful consideration from here on out when it comes to picking your pair.
