You Don't Have to Be Lonely: Read These Tips

By Brandi Goodman

Loneliness can really take a toll on mental health. It can be hard not to feel alone when you don't have someone you can count on to be there in times of need. Even when you're surrounded by other people, it still can feel lonely when no one else understands what you're going through. With some tips in mind, you don't have to be lonely anymore.

Reach Out to a Friend

Even if you feel like none of your friends will understand, try to reach out anyway. You may just find that they do know what it's like to feel the way you're feeling. If they don't, they can still be a listening ear so you can express what's on your mind. They may have some valuable advice.

Join a Support Group

If you're looking to find others with the same ailment as you, then join a support group. You can find so many online where hundreds of other people know exactly what you're going through -- or at least can relate in some way. Find support groups on Facebook and through other social media sites where you can connect with others and find new friends who get you.

Read a Mental Health Blog

Mental health blogs are out there to read. Skim over a few and see if they have posts that stand out to you. You may find a new favorite blogger to follow because of how well their stories resonate with your own experiences. It's another great way to see that you're not alone and have someone else out there who understands the feelings you're having.

Get a Pet

Sometimes, our best friends are our pets. If you're feeling alone lately, it may be wise to adopt a pet that you can socialize with. Talk to them. They're great listeners. Pet them and play with them and experience a joyful bond. You can even connect with other people over them. Bring your dog to the dog park and let your pets play while the owners converse. Take them for a walk and say hi to people you pass by. Even if you can't have a pet at home, you can find volunteer opportunities so you can engage with animals and still experience the benefits.

Don't let loneliness eat away at you. Find ways to bring others into your orbit and get the attention, support, and related stories you need to not only feel better, but also thrive. So many options are out there to help you.
