Dr. Douglas Taylor joined The Joint Chiropractic network of healthcare professionals in 2014, and has been in the Clear Lake and League City area since 2017. He received a bachelor’s degree in human biology and a minor in chemistry from University of Houston; he received his doctorate from Texas Chiropractic College in 2012.
“The thing I like best about being in the chiropractic field is helping others while using only my hands,” Dr. Taylor says. “I love my patients.”
An effective communicator who can talk to his patients on many different levels, Dr. Taylor enjoys hunting and fishing in his spare time, and even enjoys yard work to the delight of wife Liliana and their two sons and daughter.
A retired patrol officer with the Houston Police Department, Dr. Taylor knew that he had journeyed down the correct career path after performing his first chiropractic adjustment.
“When I saw the relief in the patient’s face after adjusting them, I knew I had found my calling,” he says. “I push myself to be all that I can, I strive to improve daily.”
And nothing is better than working in the community in which he resides.
“I live in the community,” Dr. Taylor says. “These people are not only my patients, but they are my neighbors. That’s the best thing about working at this clinic.
In Case You Didn’t Know
Dr. Taylor says the one thing he has to have in his refrigerator is milk, for obvious reasons: “It does a body good,” he says.
Given an opportunity to assemble the perfect dinner party, Dr. Taylor would like to gather round the table with some of history’s great minds: theoretical physicists Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking and Michio Kaku, and astrophysicist Neil Tyson deGrasse Tyson. I would love to understand their thought process in breaking down the complex nature of their studies.
The coolest thing Dr. Taylor has done, he says, is “raising my children; nothing is cooler than helping to form a mind.”
Dr. Thelma Champion D.C. attended and graduated Texas Chiropractic College in 1995. Dr. Champion knew chiropractic care was for her when working with her mentor where she learned that chiropractic is not only about treating people in pain, but also keeping them well and healthy. Her favorite thing about being a chiropractor is teaching people that true health comes from within and can be achieved naturally without drugs or surgery. She loves being in the chiropractic field to not only make a difference in patient’s lives but also teaching them how to have better health and optimum performance with chiropractic healthcare. Dr. Champion joined The Joint Chiropractic in March of 2021 and has enjoyed it ever since! In her spare time, she loves running, walking, and spending time with her friends and family. Dr. Thelma Champion has one daughter Elissa, a son named Hunter, and a Labrador named Thor. Dr. Champion also enjoys listening to country music and would love to meet George Strait, Willie Nelson, and Johnny Cash to listen and learn about their journey.
Dr. Mark Palandro became part of The Joint Chiropractic’s team of local healthcare providers in 2016 when he began serving residents in League City, where he continues doing the work he finds so rewarding.
“The best thing about working in the chiropractic field is being able to go home at night knowing that I’ve been able to help people feel better and find comfort while using nothing more than my hands,” he says.
A product of the northeast with a wife and two sons, Dr. Palandro earned his doctorate at Texas Chiropractic College. Although he has been at the League City clinic location since 2016, he joined The Joint Chiropractic family in 2014.
“I knew chiropractic was my calling after I experienced multiple injuries when I was younger and chiropractic care helped me heal,” he says.
In Case You Didn’t Know
Dr. Palandro says his ideal dinner party with any guests from history -- living or dead -- would include President Thomas Jefferson, inventor Nikola Tesla, scientist Linus Pauling, and country music legend Willie Nelson.
He says the one thing he always keeps stocked in his refrigerator is pork fat “for the health benefits,” such as the B vitamins.
Dr. Michael J. Stokes, Sr., became part of The Joint Chiropractic’s team of local healthcare providers in 2016 when he began serving residents in League City, where he continues doing the work he finds so rewarding.
“Being able to help my patients feel better with minimal drugs and/or surgery is a fabulous feeling,” he says. “I have the best job in the world. The patient’s body and God does most of the work and I get paid.”
His patients call him Doc, and he’s been a fixture in the Houston area for more than four decades. He and sweetie Susan have been together more than 20 years. He has five adult children, all college graduates, along with nine granddaughters and a grandson. The Stokes family also includes a cockapoo named Cody and a bossy cat named Mac.
He grew up in Taos, Mo., a small farming town. In his spare time, he enjoys fishing, gardening, and cooking. He earned his doctorate form Texas Chiropractic College in Pasadena in 1979. As well, Doc attended San Jacinto College, and Commonwealth College of Mortuary Science; yep, he’s a licensed funeral director/embalmer.
But his day job is all about providing his patients with the highest quality of life possible for as long as possible.
“I knew I had chosen the most wonderful profession when each and every day of my practice I saw the power of the human body able to heal itself,” he says. “Healthcare professionals help guide the body to a healable state and the human body innately heals itself.”
In Case You Didn’t Know
Doc loves to cook. “I always keep a bag of shredded sharp cheddar cheese in my fridge,” he says. “It adds a wonderful twist to many recipes.”
If he could share those recipes with any four people from history at his ideal dinner party, Doc would send an invitation to the founding fathers. “I would love to have dinner with George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Benjamin Franklin,” he says. “During the meal I would enjoy a deep conversation about the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.”
The coolest thing he has done, he says, was “have the honor of assisting in the home delivery of four of my five children.” It left him with a very clear understanding of the process. “Husbands, midwives, and obstetricians don’t deliver babies,” he says. “We catch.”
Dr. David Higginbotham became part of The Joint Chiropractic’s team of local healthcare providers in 2022 when he began serving residents in the Webster area, where he continues doing the work he finds so rewarding.
“The thing I like most about being in the chiropractic field is helping patients without drugs or surgery,” he says. “I love building relationships with patients and their families.”
Dr. H, as his patients call him, is a native son who worked previously in Houston. He enjoys spending time with his wife, as well as golfing, hunting, and fishing.
He earned his doctorate from Texas Chiropractic College in Pasadena.
Dr. H says it was natural for him to pursue a career helping others experience the holistic health benefits of chiropractic because “I’ve been seeing a chiropractor my entire life.”
Actually, it started when he was 6 years old. He and his brother climbed on the roof of their house when Dr. H decided to jump. He hurt his lower back. The family physician said to lay the boy out on a heating pad and “he’ll be fine.” Knowing her 6-year-old wasn’t going to be still on a heating pad for any length of time, Mrs. H took her son to the family chiropractor. “I entered the office dragging my right leg, unable to walk without assistance from my mother,” he recalls. “After a brief exam and chiropractic adjustment to my lower back and sacroiliac joints, I proceeded to get off the table and walk without dragging my leg. I thought that was wonderful because now I could play when I got home.”
As a professional, he has paid it forward many times. “After three decades of practice, one of my more memorable experiences was similar to the one when I was 6,” he said. “A patient had a similar condition to mine, presented the same symptoms, and after his first visit was able to return to work the next day with little to no symptoms. Chiropractic is not a quick fix, it’s a lifestyle that patients need to maintain their spinal health because you only have one spine.”
Dr. Tony Barger came to the League City clinic location of The Joint Chiropractic team in 2022, enjoying the role of local healthcare provider in the Houston region and doing the work he finds so fulfilling.
“I love helping people to become healthy and pain-free without the use of drugs or surgery, capable of achieving their full potential,” he says. “The other thing I like is putting the body in the correct position to allow it to heal itself.”
Dr. Tony, as he is known to patients, has worked previously in Lexington and Frankfort, Ky., Benton, Ark., and Pearland. He was born in Benton. “I always loved being active and played sports growing up, and I loved helping people, and that’s one of the reasons why I fell in love with chiropractic,” he says.
His wife homeschools their three children, and they enjoy traveling and experiencing different cultures, the beach, and playing video games together. They also have two pets, an 80-pound rottweiler and 60-pound German shepherd, “who think they’re lap dogs.”
When he has some alone time, Dr. Tony likes golf, riding his Indian Scout motorcycle, and playing basketball.
He earned his doctorate in chiropractic and bachelor’s in human biology from Logan College of Chiropractic in Chesterfield, Mo. He also attended University of Arkansas at Little Rock for his undergraduate requirements.
Dr. Tony thought from the age of 5 that he was going to be a dentist. That is, until he fell off a ladder in college and hurt his back. His sister forced him to go to a chiropractor, and they discussed his earache, ear infection, and numerous sets of tubes in his ears, the medication he was consuming, and the diagnosis that he was going to be deaf by 20 because of all the scar tissue. “I was also having dizziness and vertigo that lasted for several hours a day,” Dr. Tony says. “So the chiropractor said, ‘I’ll take care of it’ and gave me an adjustment. I was skeptical, but over the next several weeks, my earache, dizziness, and vertigo were gone. Without the aid of drugs or surgery, my ears weren't bothering me any more! At that moment, I knew chiropractic is what I was meant to do. I immediately changed my major from dental to chiropractic.”
In Case You Didn’t Know
The most exciting experience of Dr. Tony’s life was working in an ambulance “and having a gun pulled on me. The thrill, adrenaline, and rush to help people, it really made me appreciate life and that tomorrow is not guaranteed.”
He always keeps Mexican food stocked in his kitchen: “I could literally eat tacos and chicken enchiladas every day of my life.”
If the day ever comes that he writes his autobiography, Dr. Tony will call it “Live Your Truth” because “if you live what is true to you and your beliefs, then you will be successful and will feed your soul and spirit, and you’ll be happy.”
