Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone for Better Health

By Donna Stark

It's nice to be comfortable, isn't it? Being comfortable is usually a good thing, but I remember a time when it wasn't so good for me. I had gained a few pounds a couple of months ago and truth be told, I was actually OK with it. I was OK with it because my life was comfortable. I was exercising when the mood or time was just right and eating whatever and whenever I could. The comfort I had with those few pounds led to a few pounds more, and it wasn't until my back began to hurt and my belly spilled over my jeans that I realized maybe, just maybe, I had gotten a little too comfortable. You see, sometimes comfort can lead to stagnation, and if we aren't careful, our physical health may begin to suffer.

Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone

Everyone has their very own version of a comfort zone. Whether it's a physical location or a mental escape, comfort zones are there to do exactly what they are named for. To comfort us. But that doesn't mean they are our best option. Have you been needing a push to step outside of your comfort zone? Do you have any health or fitness goals that you want to reach? If so, here are some suggestions on how to take that first step.

  • Saying yes (and no) - It's time to start saying yes to good health and self-care and no to the routine that has placed you smack dab in the middle of this rut. Say yes to the friend who keeps calling you to go for a run, say yes to that new gym membership, but the rest of the stuff? The stuff that keeps you too busy to take care of yourself? Just give it a quick no and come back to it later if you have to.
  • Changing it up - Try making small changes to your everyday routines, such as experimenting with new foods, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or waking up earlier to go for a morning walk. Little changes can make big differences in how you feel, and if you really start feeling good, those small changes in habit may turn into life-altering ones!
  • Creating a plan - Want to make a radical change with your overall health and wellness? Well, you are going to need a plan! Take the time to write down your goals, the steps you need to make to reach those goals, and any potential challenges you see that may pop up. This will help to ensure success and will hold you more accountable.

Finding Success

You can't find success if you aren't willing to take a step in the right direction, so do something that takes you out of your usual routine and out of that comfort zone you have settled into. Your highest potential is literally just a few steps away! Are you ready to make that first one?
