Tips on How to Sharpen Your Focus

By Donna Stark

Do you remember what it was like when you were a child and you had just a few weeks left of school? Pretty hard to focus, wasn't it? Well, the same can be said now that you are an adult, and finding yourself counting down what very few weeks are left in the year. It's hard to stay focused on your work during the holiday season because all you can think about is who you still need to shop for, what party invitation you are going to accept, and how you are going to get all that cooking accomplished. And on top of that, the notifications from those group texts you are in clearly won't stop!

Focusing on Making It Through to the End of the Year

So, how can you improve your focus? How can you get everything done during the day so that you can do everything else once work is over? Here are a few tips that you can actually start implementing right away.

  • Start your day with exercise - One of the most important things you can do for optimal brain health is to exercise, and fortunately, you don't need to work out for hours to achieve this. Instead, you just need about 20 minutes each day to get your blood flowing and your focus sharpened.
  • Add fats to your diet - Adding more healthy fats to your diet is one of the best ways to improve cognitive function and encourage your brain to function more efficiently. You can find these fats in salmon, sardines, nuts, avocados, eggs, and coconut oil.
  • Eliminate distractions - This is glaringly obvious, but if your phone's notifications are going off every few minutes (or more!), then you need to do something about it.  Keep it in your bag, put it on airplane mode, or do something even more drastic ... turn it off!
  • Check your thermostat - It's hard to concentrate if you are a big sweaty mess or if you are too cold to type, so keep the temperature at a comfortable setting. And if you have no control of the thermostat, take the appropriate measures. Bring a fan to work or keep a sweater on your chair.
  • Take a break - If all else fails, simply get up and take a break. Go for a quick walk around the building, hit the water cooler, or chat up a coworker. Sometimes all that is needed is a change in scenery to refocus your brain.

Just a Few More Weeks

From childhood to adulthood, that feeling we get knowing that vacation is right around the corner, and the lack of focus we experience while getting to it, has never changed. But now, it's expected that we do something productive about it. So try some of the tips above and see if they help, and then get back to work. There's a lot to accomplish before years end.
