Don't Make These Summer Health Mistakes!

By Donna Stark

You would think that summer is a time for rest and relaxation but for many people, those couple of months under the sun can end up being very exhausting! From vacations to yard work to backyard picnics, you may be busier now than ever! But don't let that busy schedule of yours set you up for pain and discomfort down the road. Take a look at a few of the most common summertime mistakes people make that you should definitely try to avoid.

Wearing Flip-Flops Daily

There is nothing easier than sliding on a pair of flip-flops when you leave the house but that doesn't mean flip-flops should be your everyday choice for footwear. And really, how much longer does it take to put on a pair of shoes that actually offer arch support and better foot protection? Wearing flip-flops every day can result in foot, knee, and back pain, and if worn long enough, could eventually cause significant damage to your body.

Avoiding Sunscreen

Sure, everyone wants to keep that golden glow from disappearing but by avoiding the use of sunscreen or just simply forgetting to put it on, the risk of skin cancer increases dramatically. Always be sure to have an extra bottle of it in your car and by your front door. Remember, having a beautiful tan may look good but skin cancer never will.

Failing to Keep Food Safe

There may be a lot of days you spend at your local park or the beach, and like everyone else, you are sure to pack some food. But before you do so, you need to learn the basics of food safety. It's vital that you pack, cook, and store your foods properly, which generally means that hot food needs to stay hot and cold foods need to stay cold.

Drinking Too Little Water

One of the best tips to remember during the hot summer months is to drink an adequate amount of water throughout your day so that you never feel thirsty. And that's because when those feelings of thirst do show up, it generally means you are already dehydrated. Dehydration can turn into a very serious medical issue if you aren't careful, so don't risk it. Just carry enough water around with you so you can stay on top of your hydration.

Protecting Your Health During Summer

It is easy to push your health to the side when you are out having fun with family and friends, but if you do that often enough, you may be setting yourself up for some yucky days ahead. Be smart and prioritize your health so that you can be sure to have a summer filled with adventure and fun!
