Keeping Your Outdoor Time Safe
By Donna Stark
Spring is finally here and we couldn't be happier to be outside! The temperatures are starting to warm up, the grass is turning green, and the sun is shining just a little bit brighter, or so it seems, right? However, some of the things we are looking forward to could be the cause of a lot of pain and discomfort in our lives. As busy as springtime may be, it's important to slow down and prioritize safety for everyone. Here are some things to think about when it comes to enjoying the outdoors during this beautiful season.
Changes in Weather
You knew what you were getting into when you stepped outside during the winter, and it was easy to prepare for the day. But with spring? Well, it's a toss-up each day, that's for sure! Mornings could be cold and afternoons could be toasty. Days could be sunny and clear one minute, and the next it could feel like a tornado is barreling down on the town, with gusts of wind and hail as an added treat. On top of all that, it's the season for floods. So, be sure to always keep an eye on the weather and make sure you and your loved ones are prepared for the worst!
Slips and Falls
Do you know what happens when the weather changes abruptly and things get muddy, wet, and slippery outside? You got it, people start falling. If you want to avoid crashing to the ground and getting hurt, make sure you take the following precautions.
- Wear shoes that are sturdy and have good traction
- Slow down, don't be in such a rush
- Hold onto handrails when using stairs or ramps
- Wipe your shoes on a mat when entering a building
With everything coming back from its slumber, we are more likely to come in contact with the little critters of the world, and that can cause a lot of discomfort for those who don't react well to bug bites. Two easy ways to bug-proof your body are to purchase some bug repellant at your local drugstore and to cover exposed skin with clothing and a hat. You will want to be particularly careful if you are planning on spending time in an area known for ticks, too.
Enjoying the Outdoors Safely
Just because there are some things you need to be proactive with during the spring season doesn't mean you can't enjoy the outdoors. So, go ahead and grab your family and friends. It's time to head outside and have fun ... but be safe while doing so!
