Which Mattress is Right for Your Back?
By Sara Butler
If you’re sleeping on the wrong kind of mattress, then it might be responsible for the lower back pain you’re experiencing. Sleeping on a mattress that lacks the proper support for your personal needs will reinforce bad habits such as poor sleeping posture and can ultimately contribute to your spine becoming misaligned. Plus, if you’re not comfortable when you’re asleep, then you’re not going to get the restorative sleep that is so important to your overall health and wellness. Here’s what your chiropractor wants you to know about your mattress.
What Do You Need?
What you ultimately want is a mattress that is comfortable for you and also provides enough support for your back to help reduce or eliminate low back pain. When the structures of your spine are able to rejuvenate and rest at night, then they will be healthier. But, picking the right mattress to address your issues can be complicated. There are a few suggestions that can help!
Make it Personal
The number one thing that should sway you between one mattress over another is your level of personal comfort. As much as chiropractors wishes they could tell you exactly the kind of mattress you need, it’s ultimately going to be up to you to decide on a mattress that is right. If you can sleep on the mattress and wake up without stiffness or pain in the morning, then you may have just found your perfect mattress.
If you do suffer from low back pain, then you should look for a mattress that supports you but is also comfortable. If it feels like sleeping on a bed of nails because it’s so firm, that’s not going to be the best mattress to choose for a good night's rest.
Understand What You’re Buying
There are a lot of choices out there. You can buy coil mattresses, innerspring mattresses, and even crazy NASA space foam mattresses. Each mattress will be different in the support it offers, and even mattresses within the same category will differ in quality. For example, some coil mattresses differ in the number of coils as well as the arrangement of the coils, and this can mean a big difference in how you feel when you go to sleep on it.
There are also pillow top mattresses that have different levels of pillow top-ness. The depth of the top, as well as the depth of the mattress, can differentiate wildly. So, be sure to really test a bed to see which kind you respond to best and what helps you to wake up feeling good.
