Eating Habits Bad for Your Immune System

By Sara Butler

Cold and flu season is fast approaching. It's never too early to start thinking about the health of your immune system. After all, it'll help you get through a myriad of things before cold and flu season even starts.

If you want to focus on maintaining a healthy and strong immune system, then you need to take a look at your eating habits. There are some eating habits that can weaken immunity that you definitely need to be aware of.

Drinking Too Much

Imbibing too much alcohol is a sure-fire way to hurt your immune system. That's because alcohol suppresses the body's immune response, meaning that it will take longer for your body to spot potential invaders and take action to prevent infection.

Alcohol also weakens the immune system by altering the way your body absorbs nutrients. It may actually inhibit the way your body absorbs some important nutrients that support a healthy immune system such as zinc and Vitamin C.

Eating Too Much Sugar

Sugar is also an enemy to a properly functioning immune system. Studies have found that regular consumption of high-sugar foods impacts the white blood cells, which are key to the body's immune response. It can impact the way your body responds to infection and also not make the fight it does put up as efficient. You could get sick and stay sicker for longer.

Having Too Much Salt

Most Americans eat far more salt daily than is recommended. The American Heart Association says that most Americans actually have about 3,400 milligrams of salt per day, far exceeding the recommended 2,300 milligrams.

Too much salt triggers inflammation in the body, which puts you at risk for chronic disease. It also may alter the response of the body to infection since it can alter the microbiome in your gut -- your body's first line of defense when it comes to fighting off illness.

Not Eating Enough Vegetables and Fruits

Your immune system needs a variety of minerals, antioxidants, and vitamins to function properly as well as optimally. If you don't provide your body with the important nutrients it needs through eating a variety of foods such as fruits and vegetables, then it won't have what it needs to fight off illness either and maintain a properly functioning immune system.

Support your immune system by eating a variety of foods to stay healthy!
