Foods That Speed Aging

By Sara Butler

Many people are trying to find their very own fountain of youth. They immerse themselves in a lifestyle in which they focus on things that will keep them young. That's great, but it's important to understand you don't simply want to focus on the things keeping you young but also the things that may be speeding up the aging process.

There are some foods that contain something called advanced glycation end products (AGEs) that form when fat or protein combine with sugar. Don't worry! You can combat this aging culprit by watching what you eat. Here's what you need to know.

French Fried Potatoes

It doesn't matter what type of spud you're having, sweet or white, because when you deep fry them, they turn into something that isn't good for you. That's because deep-fried foods release free radicals that cause damage to your cells, accelerating the aging process. Plus, eating too much salt can dehydrate your skin and make you more prone to wrinkles.

The solution? Bake your fries and always opt for sweet potatoes since they have copper in them, which helps keep your skin elastic.

White Bread

Highly refined carbohydrates aren't great for your health or for the aging process. That's because they create AGEs when heavily refined. This has an impact on the development of chronic disease and aging.

Try to avoid foods high on the glycemic index such as white bread. Foods high on the index contribute to chronic inflammation -- which has been directly linked to illnesses and aging.

If you want to make a sandwich, then reach for sprouted whole grain bread instead of white. Look for products that contain no added sugar.

Margarine

Some longitudinal studies have concluded that margarine is not good for you. It's not healthy for your heart since it's made with partially hydrogenated oils -- also known as trans fats. These trans fats can cause damage to your cells and also make your skin more susceptible to ultraviolet light.

Instead of margarine, try avocados or olive oil. They both contain antioxidants that are good for your skin and are better for your heart too.

Soda and Coffee

Soda and coffee help accelerate the aging process not because of what they do to your health but more about what they do to your ability to get a full night's sleep. Both coffee and soda are high in caffeine and can impact your sleep at night. When you don't get enough sleep at night, then guess what? The aging process speeds up and leaves you with dark circles and fine lines.

You are what you eat, so if you want to be younger, then eat younger too!
