Finding Ways to Add Fitness to Daily Life

By Brandi Goodman

With both Women's Lung Health Week and Employee Health and Fitness Month arriving in May, now is the time to learn more about exercise. Finding ways to add fitness into your daily life, including at work and at home, is a great start. Exercise can improve your lung capacity, boost your flexibility, help with weight loss, and much more.

Take the Stairs

Riding up to the next floor in an elevator may save you time, but it doesn't do your body any good. If you want to add more fitness into your life then you should always choose the longer route. This means taking the stairs instead of the elevator. It will increase your heart rate and get your legs working, helping you to build muscle and increase your strength and stamina.

Exercise at Lunch

It might be tempting to simply sit and enjoy a meal on your lunch break, but that isn't the best use of your time. If you already spend most of your workday sitting, then going for a walk or getting other exercise at lunch is the best option. It will help to keep your body flexible and free from pain when you go back to sitting. A lunchtime walk alone or with a coworker is a great option. If your company has a gym, you can utilize that as well.

Wear a Fitness Tracker

Holding yourself accountable is easier to do when you're tracking your movements. A fitness tracker will record how many steps you're taking. If you see you've only managed a few hundred and you're already a few hours into the day, it will make you more motivated to get up and walk places. Walking 10,000 steps per day helps you to lose one pound of fat each week. If weight loss is your goal, then this is the number you should shoot for when you're keeping track.

Work Out While You Watch

You can still watch your favorite shows while maintaining your physique. Just be sure to work out while you watch instead of simply sitting. Place the treadmill, elliptical, or exercise bike in front of the television and use it as you watch your show. If you prefer to sit, then at least get up during each commercial and walk into another room so you're getting a bit of exercise in.

Fitness should always be on your mind. Be on the lookout for ways to add exercise into your daily life so you can get more active and experience all the benefits that brings.
