Quick Ways to Relieve Stress

By Randi Morse

Some people are able to naturally relax. Others have a more difficult time with it. I have friends who are constantly on the go, and any time they try to sit back and relax they find themselves feeling uncomfortable, which does not promote relaxation. It's extremely important that you learn to relax, even if you're someone who prefers to be constantly on the go. Relaxing is important for both your physical and mental health. If you struggle with relaxing, here are some things you can do in just five minutes that will dramatically reduce your body's stress.

Eat Something

Would you believe that eating something can provide a great deal of relaxation? Dark chocolate is an especially good option as it not only provides chemicals that can help boost your mood, it also tastes amazing. Simply eating something sweet is often enough to lower the body's stress level significantly. Chewing gum can also be a huge help when it comes to relaxing. While it's not a habit you want to have continually, it's a great way to lower your stress level or anxiety in a very short period of time.

Breathing and Meditation

How often do you take a deep breath? Go ahead, do it now. Breathe in to the count of five, hold it for fives counts, then breathe out for fives counts. Do this a few times a day and you'll see a large decrease in your stress level as this can help instantly relax your body and your mind. Meditation can be difficult to start regularly, but if you have five minutes you can easily relax your body. Before a stressful work or family situation, take five minutes to yourself. You can do this in an office or cubby or anywhere you can get a small amount of quiet. Close your eyes and allow everything to drift away. If you are in a noisy area, use headphones and soothing music to block out any noise. If you're concerned about time, set your alarm on your phone for five minutes. If you do this regularly you will get more comfortable with meditation and may find that it becomes a vital part of your day.

Find a small amount of time every day to relax. One of my favorite things to do is to have a bath. It takes much longer than five minutes, but I find that if I indulge in a long, hot bath once a week I am much happier and in a much better position to handle all my weekly stress.
