Staying Healthy in the Winter: 3 Tips to Follow

By Virginia Laird

As the winter months begin to encroach upon the beautiful days of fall, it is time to start beginning to get prepared for the cold. Health and wellness experts advise that staying healthy throughout winter has much to do with preparation and healthy habits. Although life in the winter time may take place more often indoors, it does not have to be in front of the TV eating all the chips in the world.  Rather, it is best that you continue to follow your healthy habits, as well as consider adding a few more. Health and wellness experts have suggested a few tips for you to consider making part of your daily routine. These include:

  • Dress for the weather
  • Carry sanitizer at all times
  • Make time to exercise

Dress for the Weather

Although dressing super warm for colder weather should be a no-brainer, there are some who may not understand its importance. Health and wellness experts suggest that dressing warm can help prevent issues with infections in the lungs. Research suggests that breathing in air that's too cold, or being exposed to very cold air can lead to pneumonia, bronchitis, and other illnesses which can prove to be detrimental to your overall health. The next time you head out in the cold think, twice before going without your coat and beanie.

Carry Sanitizer at All Times

Keeping your hands germ-free is one way to prevent the spread of illness or falling ill yourself. Health and wellness experts suggest that you carry hand sanitizer with you almost everywhere you go. This is not to suggest using sanitizer in lieu of washing with soap and water is best. Instead, it is to offer a way to clean your hands when washing is not an option. It is suggested that you sanitize your hands after being in large public places (e.g., the grocery store), coming in contact with others, and much more. Keeping your hands clean is the key to staying well throughout the winter months.

Find Time to Exercise

No matter what time of year it may be, exercise plays a huge part in keeping the body healthy. For many, exercise begins in a gym. However, health and wellness experts teach that exercise can take place anywhere. With workouts available online to stream, in DVD form, and with the ability to walk quickly through your neighborhood, there is really no excuse to skip out on exercise. It is advised that you should try to get at least 20 minutes of exercise at least three times each week to promote a healthy lifestyle.

With this knowledge in hand you are now ready to set a path to begin staying healthy throughout the winter months.
