What Would You Do If Disaster Strikes?
By Tom Herrin
Some questions seem to be constantly out there for people to deal with or avoid. Many people choose to avoid those that make them feel a little uncomfortable. It almost seems that many think if they don’t talk about something, they will never have to deal with it. While it may sound good, it never provides any real help in times of crisis. Too many put disaster planning off because there just doesn’t seem to be a right time for it with so many other things going on in life. A good emergency plan can carry over into several other things in their lives while helping to make good decisions ahead of time. Those emergencies can occur anywhere.
The More People Involved, The Better The Plan May Be
A good emergency plan should consider everything that might be needed in a dangerous situation. Once these things have been considered, it can be narrowed down to the basics. For sure, everyone needs water. It is recommended that there is enough bottled water to last at least a few days. Food that does not require cooking is another must. After that, first aid supplies and copies of important papers will probably be needed and used. If all of these things can be kept in something that can be picked up and carried out on a moment’s notice, they will be most useful.
Ensuring Safety Around Utilities Is Helpful
It is a good idea for everyone to know how to turn off the utilities. In many cases, utility lines are damaged and may pose a life-threatening danger. People should know how to turn off electricity, gas, and water. A regular session and practice of how to safely do this can be very practical in a time of serious need.
Expect Communication Problems
There is a good chance that communication will be disrupted. If this happens, everyone needs a backup plan for communicating. If cell phones don’t work, numbers may be lost. Every family member needs to have a place where important numbers and email addresses are stored. If they become separated, they may be reunited through some of the shelters or agencies that provide help. Having the correct contact information can speed this process. After seeing all of the recent disasters, ask yourself if you have a good disaster plan. It may save lives.
Also important is being in good health to withstand the turmoil your life will be in. Don't take your health for granted, either. It may save your life.
