Is Your Health as Good When You Work Shifts?

By Tom Herrin

Much of the time, when people are working in an effort to provide for their needs, they simply do it.  They may not have the opportunity to really get a feel as to whether their health is being affected until the bottom drops out.  The impact that a job can have on health is considerably larger than many may be aware of.  For those who work some kind of schedule that is a little different from the norm, it could have a greater impact.  People are basically designed to be active during the daylight hours and sleep at night.  This can better support their internal clocks and their needs for various things provided by the sun.  When they depart from this, they risk experiencing several health issues that may require attention.

Some Problems Can Become Serious

Whether or not people know it, working shifts can increase the chances of having some fairly common but serious problems.  According to some studies, those who work shifts may experience a greater risk of developing issues related to the heart and circulatory system.  This may include high blood pressure and heart disease among others.  They also seem to be at higher risk of diabetes.  This may be due to the fact that so many of these workers fail to make sure they have good meals but, instead, eat many products that may be available in vending machines.

A Little Forethought May Protect Health

It doesn't really take that much effort to be certain to take precautions.  Developing a habit of eating good meals on a steady schedule may be a good start.  Another thing that is good for all is to include a good exercise program and follow it somewhat regularly.  Skipping it may have some bad consequences in a hurry.  Moving around at breaks on the job can help as well.

Make Planning a Family Project

Since the entire family may be impacted by your work and health, include them in as much of the planning as possible.  Set aside some good family time that works for everyone so that you may still get out and be active together.  Try to avoid being one of those silent parents who is always asleep when everyone else is active.  You need to establish a good sleep schedule, but look for ways to make that work while still making those activities.
