More Colors May Mean Better Health
By Tom Herrin
A healthy meal looks different for different people. At one time, a lot of people in some areas seemed to think that a good, healthy meal was one that had a lot of brown and white in it. This may have been in the form of meat, potatoes or rice, gravy, and bread. Some may have seen this as the benchmark of a good meal. It may have had some merit, but in more recent times, many people have seen the light in the form of colors. That is, a good way to be certain that a meal is healthy may be to have lots of colors on the plate.
Do You Feel Blue?
As more has been learned about healthy foods in the past few years, blue foods have gotten much more attention. These blue, or purple, foods have some good things to offer. Some of the benefits associated with them are that they contain high amounts of antioxidants, may help reduce risks of Alzheimer's, and may help fight inflammation. Some of these foods are popular at breakfast while others are consumed at any time. A few of them are blueberries, eggplant, purple cabbage, figs, and plums.
Red Is Bright as Well as Healthy
The perception of the color red is usually that it can grab attention or influence others. Some see it as a warm color and is considered to be favorable when worn as part of attire. When it comes to food, many people have not seen much of it on their plates, except for tomatoes. These foods are thought to decrease risks of heart disease and diabetes, as well as improve skin. This group of foods includes red peppers, beets, cherries, raspberries, and cranberries. Some of these are great in salads or any other kinds of a dish.
Make the Move and Eat Healthier
It is fortunate that it does not require any earthshaking changes in order to enhance the healthiness of meals. You don't even have to do much studying to improve your meals. All you have to do is pick a few colors and include them. You can follow that up by selecting foods in that color group and put them in there. It can turn into a fun challenge and may include all members of the family. It is so simple that it is worth a try. You have nothing to lose.
