Weight Training Really Can Help Us Age Well
By Tom Herrin
The thought of aging is a little scary to many of us. We have seen others who struggle and seem to decline as they have gotten older. Many of us can relate this to grandparents who we may have seen deteriorate. While aging is a fact of life, we don't all have to turn off a switch and let ourselves go. It is possible for many of us to enjoy life as we grow older and preserve our health. A way that has proven effective in recent years is weight training. The thought of this may make some people laugh, but the truth is it can really make a difference.
Maintain a More Youthful Appearance
Most of us have seen someone we have known for many years and wondered how they got in such shape. They may appear to have picked up fat in some places and lost muscle in others. Their look has changed from lean to pudgy. Weight training can help our metabolism to burn fat more efficiently. At the same time, our bodies can make better use of the nutrients we take in. These two things can combine to provide a look we can be more confident about as it may help to improve our posture as well as upper strength.
Strengthen Skeletal System
As we age, many people suffer from some kind of bone loss. Some of the related problems can be really serious. Working with weights has proven to be a way to strengthen bones and increase density. Doing so with regularity can also help to improve mobility and reduce pain for those with arthritis. It may sound impossible to do, but it can seem to work miracles. It is worth a try. I can attest to success with this myself, as I have known it to be effective.
Help Avoid Dependence on Others
While very few of us ever become totally independent and without need of others, it is possible to maintain enough independence to live on our own and take care of ourselves. Weight training can help us to maintain sufficient strength to be able to stand and walk on our own. This is important. It can help us to have better mental function, as well as a good reaction time, and maintain a more positive outlook. It is important in managing our own lives.
