Do You Have a Hormonal Imbalance?
By Sara Butler
Your hormones help to keep your body running smoothly and optimally. These little chemical messengers help your body to perform important functions such as communicate and regulate. The problem is that problems can arise from a hormonal imbalance and can occur so gradually that you may not even notice. Here are a few of the signs that you may be suffering from a hormonal imbalance. If any of these sound familiar, it's important to have it checked out by a medical professional.
Fatigue
Fatigue can strike anyone at any time, but with enough rest, a healthy diet, and proper hydration, feeling fatigued is something that should be easily overcome -- unless your hormones are to blame. If you're caring for yourself as you should but still feel exhausted, then think about getting those hormone levels checked. Hormonal issues that can cause fatigue are more common than you might expect.
Anxiety
Part of the job of your hormones is to communicate with your brain. Sometimes due to excess stress, the chemical messengers in your brain go a little haywire as they're bathed in stress hormones such as cortisol. This can spark feelings that feel an awful lot like anxiety.
This hormone imbalance can be tamed by eating a proper diet and finding ways to appropriately manage stress. Try deep breathing, exercise, and meditation to help you get control of your fight-or-flight response so that you're not constantly in a stressed state.
Insomnia
There are many reasons why you may have trouble sleeping from time to time, but persistent insomnia may be the result of a hormone imbalance.
Your body uses the chemical melatonin to help it get to sleep. But this chemical is influenced heavily by other hormones in the body. If one hormone is out of balance, then it can throw off your melatonin too and that can cause trouble when it's time to go to bed at night. If you're not sleeping well, talk to a medical professional so you can try to figure out why.
Hair and Skin Changes
The condition of your skin has a lot to do with your hormones. If you notice thinning hair or nails, dry skin, or hair loss, then it may be due to a hormone imbalance. Get it checked out!
