Simple Ways to Boost Your Immune System
By Lexi Herrin
Everyone has an immune system, and the higher functioning it is, the less likely you are to get sick. Some people may be more prone to getting sick because their immune system is compromised. Either way, there are still germs out there that can impact your health. Boosting your immune system is one way to fight off certain illnesses -- and there are several different ways to do so.
Get Good Sleep
One of the best things that you can do to give yourself a boost is to get adequate sleep. Getting good sleep and your immune health are closely linked. If you've ever wondered why you sleep more when you are sick, this is the reason why. When you are sick, your body sleeps more as a way of helping, or allowing, your immune system to fight the illness. Sleeping is the recharge that your body needs to "win the fight," so to speak. Getting enough sleep can help prevent illness before it strikes.
Stay Hydrated and Change Your Eating Habits
Eating habits are extremely important no matter what, but they are especially important if you are trying to boost your immune system. You may be able to decrease some inflammation in your body by eating more whole plant foods because of the antioxidants in those foods. More healthy fats work the same way as long as you don't eat too many of them. That would be adding omega-3 fatty acids to your diet. Eating more fermented foods also helps by improving your digestive system. That would include consuming something like yogurt, which contains a probiotic, or maybe even a probiotic supplement. Another important eating habit is cutting back on sugar. Eating a lot of sugar increases the likelihood of obesity or developing type 2 diabetes, both of which make you more prone to illness.
A Little Light Exercise Goes a Long Way
Although too much exercise or exercise that is too intense can be bad for your immune system, moderate exercise can boost it. Regular moderate exercise helps to lower inflammation and can help your immune cells regenerate more regularly. Walking, jogging, swimming, light hiking, and bicycling are all good examples of the types of moderate exercise that could be done a few days a week that would also help to give you an immune boost.
