Can Chiropractic Boost your Emotional State?

By Genevieve Smith

While many people visit the chiropractor for their physical health, research has found that regular adjustment sessions can improve the mental and emotional health of clients as well. Chiropractors address the body through the nervous system by correcting any misalignments of the spine and clearing any pathways in order to un-obstruct nerves. While some studies have focused on patients’ emotional states post-adjustment, others have narrowed the scope to focus on whether those with anxiety and depression can also find a solution in chiropractic.

Chiropractic and Mood Boosts

In a study of 2818 patients who received chiropractic care, 76 percent reported an improvement in their mental and emotional states. They also reported a decrease in stress and an increase in general life enjoyment in the months following their chiropractic sessions. Not only can chronic pain be a detraction from a feeling of happiness and freedom in life, but also adjustments measurably increase blood flow, contributing to an increase in energy and thus mood boosts. Researchers were curious if chiropractic adjustments could help those suffering solely from the mental disorders of anxiety and depression, sans chronic pain.

Anxiety, Depression, and Subluxation

A case study was conducted with those diagnosed with anxiety and depression as a follow up to the previous study that found that chiropractic helped with participants’ mental states. It was a small group of five who received 12 chiropractic adjustments. Published in the Journal of Upper Cervical Research, it found that 100 percent of participants reported a “significant decrease in depressive symptom ratings” and a “significant decrease in anxiety.”

Targeting Misalignments for the Nervous System

Chiropractors can address issues of mental health by focusing on the first through third vertebrae, located in your neck. Misalignments here can cause pressure in an area of the brain stem which can have neurological and chemical side effects.

Chiropractic care can boost your spirits in a variety of ways. It can increase blood flow, relieve you of chronic or intense pain, and may be able to address anxiety and depression. While medications for anxiety and depression target brain chemistry, it’s possible you may find that a series of adjustments focused on mood improvement may be a natural, drugless way for you to find mental clarity and relief.
