Get Into the Right Mindset to Get Fit
By Genevieve Smith
When it comes to self-satisfaction, motivation can at times be hard to come by. Whether you want to improve your diet or fitness, sometimes what you need is a little direction, and it needn’t come in the form of one more nutrition article or workout video. It can be that all you need are the right words and ideas to get you through. Buzzfeed collected feedback from those working on the right attitude for health, and I’m going to share my favorites here.
Celebrate the little wins - One can set big goals, but it’s a series of small successes that get you there. Huzzah!
Define what “fit” means to you - You know your body, and you know what you love about it. What would you like to celebrate and enhance within your own figure? Bring your favorite parts of your individual physique to life, comparison to others be damned.
Be ready to make compromises - Sure, you told yourself the plan was to hit the gym six times a week; but today, you’re just not feeling it. You can stop yourself now, the guilt trip is not worth the calories. Instead, accept how you’re feeling if there’s no turning it around. Fit in something small, like 15 push-ups and 15 crunches. You’ll find a bit of gratitude and pride in yourself on the other side of the small compromise.
Build up your goals - Do you have something in mind you’d like to enhance, and have an image of how you’d like that area to look? First, do a little background research on how to build up to the workout that will get you there. If you go straight to stair sprints, for example, you may sabotage your goals. Prep your body first through training with hip thrusts and glute bridges. Once you’ve built up enough muscle that way, your body will be more capable of tackling the next level, and you'll have set yourself up for accomplishable goals, and emotional success.
Chill and stable wins the race - Enthusiasm is great. But chill out, bro. (I just really wanted to say that sentence.) Really though, tempering wild exuberance with persistent and smart training will get you to the body you want. Be patient, pamper your self-image with kindness and gratitude, and keep at the workouts, both big and small. Sometimes approaching your body goals with too much excitement can put one on a less-than-ideal and destabilizing ride of highs and lows. Slow and steady, bro.
Sometimes, you have to get into your own head to make your body look the way you want it. Find joy in each success and experience it fully. Celebrate! You know your body better than anyone, so find out how it can truly shine. If motivation for a big gym day escapes you today, no matter. You don’t have time for guilt, you’re a fantastic creature! Do some sit-ups and push-ups in the living room and thank yourself. For more of this kind of talk, read this post for more health tips.
