4 Chiropractic Tips for Using Computers

By Brandi Swieter

Whether at home or at work, there are some tips people should follow when using computers. No one should ever simply sit down and begin typing. Proper posture and technique will go a long way in keeping back pain at bay. With some tips from the chiropractor, more people can use their devices in a safer way.

Adjust the Workstation to Meet Your Needs

Not everyone works in the same place each day. If a person switches between desks or other work locations, whether at school, work, or home, he or she should make sure to adjust the workstation to meet his or her needs. Adjustments may include moving the chair up or down to be at eye level with the computer, be sure the feet are flat on the floor, and the back is supported while remaining upright. It may also be necessary to move the mouse and keyboard to a proper position so the wrist is not bent up or down and left to feel strain.

Work in Smaller Segments

It is not wise to continue working at the computer for hours at a time. Even a half-hour of use could cause pain to set in if people aren’t careful. It’s best to work in smaller segments, getting a task or two completed before taking a break.

Stretch During Sessions

While work is in session, be sure to stretch and move when possible. To improve circulation and prevent fatigue, it is important to stretch and move the muscles and joints. Allowing them to become stiff will ensure pain sets in sooner rather than later. Computer users should take a break at least every 10 minutes, stopping for 20 seconds to stretch out their body and get their hands off the mouse or keyboard.

Get Up and Move

Some simple stretches at the desk can go a long way, but actually getting up and moving the body away from the computer and the work is even better for increasing circulation and preventing pain. People need to move their bodies if they want to avoid stiffness. Sitting for long periods can also be damaging to the back and body, so getting up to move and walk for a while will be a huge help.

Anyone who uses computers regularly and starts to experience any sort of pain should visit The Joint Chiropractic. A doctor of chiropractic can help assess the situation and offer additional advice for remaining pain-free while using computers and other technology. Tech neck is a very high possibility in today’s day in age, and it applies to not only phones but also computers, tablets, and other technological devices as well.
