6 Chiropractic Tips for Retail Workers
By Brandi Goodman
Retail workers already have a stressful job. Not only do they have to deal with customers, but they also spend a majority of their day standing -- often in one spot. This can cause a lot of tension within the body. As the holidays approach, the job gets even more stressful. With these six chiropractic tips in mind, retail workers may be able to get through their shifts a little easier.
Add a Cushion to Your Station
Place a mat at your workstation if allowed so you add cushion to where you're standing. This will help to alleviate some of the tension within your lower body and back that tends to build as you stand on a hard surface all day. Cashiers may be more likely to use this trick since the mat is out of view of customers. A greeter at the front of the store won't have that luxury.
Choose Comfortable Shoes
The shoes you wear at work can play a significant role in the way your body feels by the end of the day. High-heeled shoes or footwear that is too tight will most likely leave your legs and feet feeling sore and even swollen. A pair of comfortable shoes that fit well are best for long hours of standing.
Exercise Often
A strong body is better suited to handle the job duties of a retail worker. If you never exercise and have weak joints and muscles, your body will not be able to hold up by the end of the workday. You'll feel sore, stiff, and very fatigued. Exercise often and stay in shape if you want your body to be able to handle your job without feeling so much pain by the end of your shift.
Drink Lots of Water
It's important to stay hydrated during your work shift. Your joints need hydration to remain flexible and prevent stiffness. Drink water throughout the day as needed to quench your thirst and keep your body limber.
Stretch Before, During, and After Your Shift
A standing shift can be harsh on the body. Stretch before you start to ensure you're adequately prepared. Don't stop there though. You'll want to stretch during your shift as well to stay limber and keep your joints flexible. It will help to prevent some aches from setting in. Stretch after your shift is over to ensure a faster recovery time.
See a Chiropractor
Chiropractic care can greatly improve your range of motion, flexibility, and ability to handle your job duties. See a chiropractor regularly to maintain your well-being and limit tension within your body. The Joint Chiropractic offers walk-in hours so you can visit when needed.
Consider chiropractic care and advice if you work in retail, especially during the holiday season. Stores such as Walmart have already started their layaway process to prepare for Christmas and it has workers going above and beyond their usual job duties.
