Do You Have an Unhealthy Gut?
By Sara Butler
Your body is all about balance. One of the places that balance is most important is your gut, as it needs the right amount of good bacteria in it to stay healthy. When your gut bacteria get out of whack there are some clear signs and symptoms that this has occurred. Here's what you need to know in order to identify an unhealthy gut so you can take steps to make it healthier.
Why it Matters
You may not think your gut does more than simply move food through it, but the truth is that the health of your gut really impacts your overall health. When the bacteria that live in your gut are out of balance, then it can impact your immune system as well as other health conditions.
Your Stomach Isn't Right
Does your stomach ever simply not feel right? Bloating, heartburn, and nausea are clear signs that your gut health is not up to par. Stomach discomfort can be the result of poor digestion and has been linked to other more serious gastrointestinal issues such as colitis, inflammatory bowel disease, reflux, and irritable bowel syndrome.
You Have Cravings
If you crave some foods, such as those high in sugar, then it can be a sign that your gut is out of balance. Some experts believe that the overgrowth of certain bacteria in the gut can cause you to crave more sugar. So, take steps to balance your gut if you've been craving the sweet stuff more than normal.
You're Feeling Depressed
The hormones in your body that impact mood are mostly produced in your gut. That means that if you're having issues with mood, sleep, memory, or even appetite, then your gut may be to blame. This can lead to feelings of depression, so make sure that you seek out medical advice if this happens to you.
Your Skin is Itchy
Skin that breaks out in rashes can be a sign that things aren't going well in your gut. That's because the skin often reflects what is going on under the surface -- and if you've got an imbalance in gut bacteria, then it might be causing skin issues.
Your gut is very important to your overall health and wellness, so make sure you take steps to ensure it's working as it should. Probiotics are one way to help, but a healthy and balanced diet plays a big role in getting your gut what it needs to be healthy, too.
