Set Your Metabolism Straight: Breakfasts to Avoid

Breakfast, in addition to waking you up, also works to wake up your metabolism for the day. It refuels your body's tank after a long night of working hard to repair in sleep and it helps to balance your blood sugar so you don't become hangry.

What you eat for that very first meal of the day can have a huge impact on your metabolism and your health overall. Nutrient-dense foods are the best choice, but many people have issues with time in the morning that prevent them from getting the balanced breakfast they should. As a result, many breakfast foods are eaten that don't support your metabolism the way you'd probably like. Here are some breakfast foods you should avoid and what to eat instead to help keep your metabolism running smoothly.

Plain Bagels (Or Sugary Cereal)

What do plain bagels and sugary cereals with cartoon mascots have in common? They're very high in carbohydrates but decidedly low in fiber. Your body needs fiber to slow the rise of glucose levels in your blood. If it rises too quickly, then it will inevitably crash and leave you feeling as if you want to crawl back into bed instead of helping to set you up for the day. Plus, refined grains have been linked to higher inflammation and body fat, both of which are not good for your overall health and wellness.

Instead of high carbohydrate, low fiber foods, have some whole grains in the morning. Whole grains such as oatmeal or even quinoa or whole-grain toast are a great way to start your day. Add in a little nut butter and you've got healthy fats and proteins to help you feel fuller for longer, too.

Muffins

Muffins may seem like a good idea when it comes to breakfast. They're easy to grab and some even have fruit! But the truth is that they're full of saturated fat and refined carbohydrates, not to mention one muffin could take a large chunk of your recommended daily calories -- and you're really going to need those later.

If you're looking for a breakfast that's easy to have on the go, then try switching to something with a dose of fiber and protein. Overnight oats, smoothies, Greek yogurt with your favorite nuts or fruit, or even a breakfast burrito is a good option.

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day for a reason. Make sure to start your day off right.
