How to Slash Your Salt Intake

By Sara Butler

When most people think of getting healthy, they often think of ways to slash sugar and certain types of fats from their diets. But there’s another category that should be on your mind if you’re making your health and wellness a priority -- your salt intake. Sodium tends to slide under the radar even though it can be as damaging to your health as other things you’re trying to avoid. Your body does need salt to function but get too much of it and it can have a big impact on your overall health. Here are some simple ways you can slash your salt intake for better health.

How Much?

Your body needs salt each day to work optimally, but it needs to be limited. Experts recommend adults get no more than 2,300 milligrams per day. That may seem like a lot, but when you consider how quickly salt can add up, it’s really not -- it’s equal to about one tablespoon. Make sure to read nutrition labels and keep track of how much salt you’re consuming.

Are You Craving It?

Sometimes you want a salty, crunchy snack. If you find yourself craving something salty and crunchy, then you may want to think about why that is. For some people, they just want to bite down on something out of boredom or frustration. When you want something salty, stop and think about why you want it. Mindfulness is a great way to break bad snacking habits.

Cook at Home

When you go out to eat, dishes are often saltier than you’d make them at home since restaurants often use excessive amounts of salt in their dishes. Same goes for buying pre-packaged convenience foods. The best way to fight back against extra salt in your diet is to cook at home. That way, you can control how much salt you’re actually eating during meals.

Look Elsewhere for Flavor

Replace salt when you’re cooking by experimenting with different herb and spice combinations. It's a great way to add more flavor to food without adding more salt. Plus, adding more flavor to your food will mean you’re less likely to reach for the salt shaker to try and add more flavor.

Limiting the amount of salt in your diet is very important to your continued good health. If you need some help trying to devise a strategy to help, then talk with a chiropractor at The Joint today!
