Fix Your Fat Mistakes

By Sara Butler

Even though dietary fat has gotten a bad reputation over the years, it's an essential nutrient your body needs to function optimally. Without it, you wouldn't be able to stay warm, protect your organs, create energy, or absorb fat-soluble nutrients as you need to. But as with most other things in life, when it comes to fat it's definitely quality over quantity. It's important to eat the right kinds of fats, such as unsaturated fat instead of saturated fat. Eating the right kind of fat in the right way is something you have to learn, and people make a lot of mistakes along the way. Here are some of the biggest fat mistakes people make and how you can avoid them.

Not Knowing the Different Types of Fat

Fat is generally considered to be a nutrient people want to stay away from in order to help them achieve and maintain a healthy weight. While it is true that fats are fairly calorie dense, they also are not all created equal.

The truth is that there are several types of fat. Some of them are healthy and essential to a healthy body while some are definitely not good for you. Trans fat is a type of fat you should stay away from at all costs, but other dietary fats such as omega-3 fatty acids are needed for proper brain function and health. That's why it's never a good idea to do a blanket ban on all fats. Instead, include high-quality fats in your diet such as the fats found in nuts, olive oil, and fatty fish.

You Eat Too Many Fat-Free or Low-Fat Foods

Because fat has a lot of calories, many diet foods cut it out or reduce it in order to reduce the overall number of calories per serving. It's important to understand that low-fat or no-fat doesn't mean it's healthier for you. Often, these foods are loaded with other things such as sugar to replace the fat and make it taste like something you want to eat. If you're going to buy something low-fat or non-fat, make sure to read the nutrition label and find out exactly what is in the food you're looking at.

Getting fat right in your diet can be tricky, but it's not impossible. Talk to the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic if you have questions concerning health and diet -- they can help steer you in the right direction.
