Seniors: Prevent Falls With Chiropractic Tips
By Brandi Goodman
Older adults may start to struggle with poor balance and coordination as their joints weaken. It doesn't have to cause falls and mishaps, though. With some chiropractic advice in mind, and routine chiropractic care, you can remain on your feet and as mobile as possible.
Get Routine Chiropractic Care
The first step is to start seeing a chiropractor. You need routine chiropractic care to ensure no subluxations or joint restrictions are plaguing you. If they are, getting them corrected can help you avoid the problems that come with them. You'll work on your range of motion and coordination, and receive helpful tips from your doctor about how to stay healthy and in the best shape possible.
Make Sure to Exercise
Your chiropractor will encourage you to exercise. This is the best way to ensure your joints and bone health are up to par. You need to keep them strengthened and working well through regular workouts. The doctor may offer some diagrams for certain stretches or exercises that can help for a particular target area you're worried about.
Get Up Slowly
Sometimes, simply getting up too quickly is the problem. You stand too fast and find yourself unstable on your feet because of it. You may experience a drop in blood pressure, which causes this phenomenon. You should always get up slowly and use caution no matter where you're sitting. Installing grab bars or having something to lift yourself with nearby can also help. The same applies when you're in a lie-down position.
Wear Comfortable, Yet Sturdy Shoes
Your shoes can also play a role in your problems. Wear too-tight shoes or ones that are much too large for your feet, and your balance is going to suffer. You need a pair of comfortable, yet sturdy shoes that help your feet feel great so you can remain on them. Flats are not ideal. You need athletic shoes with traction to maintain your balance.
Get Plenty of Sleep
Poor sleep is also a culprit of poor balance and coordination. If you're tired and groggy, you're more likely to stumble and fall. Make sure you're getting plenty of sleep at night so you wake feeling well-rested and ready for the day. You'll be more likely to remain on your feet.
Some chiropractic tips in mind -- paired with routine chiropractic care -- can help make the aging process easier. If you don't want to fall, you need to keep up with your exercise and make sure your body remains strong and capable. Chiropractic can help.
