Looking for Some Simple Ways to Thrive?
By Sandy Schroeder
Our wellness really reflects on everything we do. It can be the difference between really enjoying life or simply plugging along. When we feel great, it’s easy to arrange lunches with friends and consider weekend trips. When we do not feel great, life moves slower, but we can remedy that with a few simple steps.
Here are some ways to improve wellness.
Rest well – Getting enough sleep can be the difference between a bad day and a great one. Tiredness spills over onto everything else and makes the day incredibly long. Make sure you are getting 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night, and add a quick 20-minute nap if you need one.
Stretch out for 3 to 5 minutes – There is a yoga pose call savasana that is done at the end of each yoga session. You simply close your eyes and stretch out flat on a mat with arms at your side. You could close your office door and try this at work, or use it at the end of the day. Letting your brain and body rest for a few minutes can ease tension and help you regain your perspective.
Move outdoors every day – Think about the times you feel your best. Many of those times may be outside. Walking in the park, biking around the neighborhood, or gardening in your backyard can give you lift with lots of sunshine and breezes.
Just breathe – Meditation comes in many flavors. Some people meditate as they walk. Other sit quietly and watch their breath as they let go of the day. Still others learn mindfulness meditation, which helps them think clearer and regain their perspective. However you pause, that quiet time can help you keep your balance as you let go of stress.
Reach out – Look around to see where you might be able to help. Deliver fresh-baked cookies to a neighbor who does not get out much. Lend a hand at your local animal or marine shelter, library, or senior center. Finding ways to help others can easily deliver a wellness boost, too.
Walk off worries – Whatever bugs you can impact your brain and body. Shed the stress with short or long walks, before breakfast, after lunch, or later in the evening. Many people say they have their most creative moments when they are out walking. Boost your health and ease your mind a step at a time.
You may have other little tricks to boost your wellness. Some people cook or bake, plant flowers, sketch or paint, or fix things in the garage. Whatever works to help you relax a little and smile more counts.
