Why You Should Still Spend Time Outside (Safely)

By Stepy Kamei

As people around the world begin to adjust to a new normal in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, it's clear that some very sudden and sometimes drastic changes are being made. One of the more significant changes most of us are having to deal with rather abruptly is shifting to spending the majority of our time indoors. While there are many unknowns right now, one thing that is clear is that staying in your home and limiting your interaction with others outside the home is one way in which you can reduce the risk of getting sick. Still, this doesn't mean you should avoid the outdoors entirely, as this can pose health risks as well. Keep on reading to learn about how you can balance your time indoors and outdoors in a way that fortifies your health and well-being.

How Being Outside Helps Your Health

Studies have made it clear that people tend to experience a wide range of health benefits after spending time outside.

First of all, it's crucial to get direct access to natural sunlight. Even if it's an overcast or cloudy day, your body will still benefit from being outdoors during the day. This is because you'll be naturally aligning your circadian rhythm, which is responsible for your sleep-wake cycle. It relies on access to natural sunlight in order to help your body and mind determine when to stay awake, and when to start feeling sleepy.

Being outside can also provide you with Vitamin D, which is important for strengthening bone density. Vitamin D is also known to be a natural mood booster!

Speaking of improving your mood, many mental health professionals encourage their clients to walk outside at least once every day. Being outside, especially among nature, can have a truly healing and restorative effect on our bodies and minds. Daily walks have been shown to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, improve sleep, and increase cognitive function such as focus and productivity.

Ways to Venture Outside Safely

If you have a backyard, you can safely spend time outside in this confined area. Go outside to play with your pet, chat with family members, or read a book. Alternatively, you may want to make a routine of going outside for a walk every day, for at least 15 minutes each day. Be sure to keep physical distance from anyone else who may be walking nearby, and wear a mask if possible.

Going for a walk with others in your household, or taking your dog with you, can be a great way to turn a daily walk from a chore into a fun activity.
