Add a Few Berries for Flavor and Health

By Tom Herrin

Increasing the variety in our diets should be a priority for all of us.  There is much to be said about getting away from the same old things all of the time.  There is a rich supply of foods available in most places, and broadening the menu will likely do wonders to make people healthier.  When looking for something to fill this particular bill, berries may do the trick.  They can produce a lot of bang for the buck and make a family meal a real treat.

They Can Help Fight Inflammation

It is not necessary to have major health problems to have inflammation.  Most people experience some.  Inflammation is often the result of some kind of injury or illness.  Over time, this can take a toll on the body.  Levels of inflammation are measured by certain markers in the body.  When some of them are higher, the risk of heart disease is increased.  In studies, consumption of higher amounts of berries has shown to lower the levels of these markers.

It May Lower Cholesterol

With the improved amount of education regarding health today, cholesterol levels have become a greater concern.  The two kinds of cholesterol produced by the body are referred to as LDL, which is bad, and HDL, which is good.  Studies have shown good results for people who increase their intake of berries.  The decrease in LDL levels seems to range from 11 to 28 percent.  Those are pretty significant figures in any case.  Decreases in bad cholesterol can lessen that chance of heart disease.

They Taste Good

Berries can be added to all kinds of meals.  They are great for enhancing a breakfast.  We frequently have them with a yogurt or cottage cheese.  In addition to that, we add other fruits and nuts or a good crunchy cereal.  They are also good as treats between meals.  A cup of berries eaten, by themselves or with some other snack item, can be healthy and add a little something to change the pace.  Adding them to an assortment of dishes or salads can create a flavorful meal.  They are available fresh or frozen and come in all varieties.  As part of that healthy lifestyle you are trying to achieve, add some berries.  Be daring and try different kinds every day of the week.  Your family may think you are a creative genius.
