How to Think Around Corners on the Job

By Sandy Schroeder

Thinking differently than everybody else can make you stand out and open the door to more options, but how do you keep that momentum going?

Business Insider suggests priming the pump to keep the novel ideas coming. Here are some of their best tips to think independently and use to your advantage.

Learn from the Best

As you spot the people who really know what they are doing, make it a habit to watch what they say and do. Take notes, ask questions and analyze what they did and why. They may be the best resources to launch new directions, and they may be happy to share their insights because you are interested.

Read Widely

In a fast-paced world where new ideas often show up in unexpected spots, it’s smart to be aware of history, art, technology, medicine, science and literature. If you love to browse bookstores, this may be the time to make repeated sweeps through the new sections, scooping up inspirations.

Give Yourself Time

Almost like a good soup, the most creative endeavors sometimes need to simmer. As you acquire and digest information, let your brain digest everything and then watch for unique connections.

Cultivate Sources

The most successful people that I have ever worked with usually knew almost everything about their company and the people in it. They were also able to interact with all sorts of people, easily exchanging ideas. Those abilities allowed them to quickly accomplish all sorts of things.

Be Open to Change

Really new ideas may take totally new paths. As you learn more about your job and your company, leave the door open for all sorts of new directions, and see where they lead.

Learn Company History

Researching the history of a company can be tedious, but it may help you connect the dots in a whole new way. Company veterans will appreciate your efforts, too.

Keep a Notebook

If you really want to be able to generate lots of new ideas, jot down new thoughts whenever they show up. If you have worked on creative projects before you know, the spark for a new thought may come from something you did before. One note may lead to lots of other thoughts.

Listen and Learn

When you are talking with people who really know what they are doing, listen closely. Then you will be able to ask questions that carry the conversation further and help you connect better.

All of these tips may inspire a richer appreciation of your work with lots of new offshoots.
