How to Make This Summer Perfect

By Sandy Schroeder

Most of us have all sorts of dreams and schemes for this summer.  Everything is different and it should be great. If you can relate, it may be hard to decide what to do first. Where to be, what to do, and what to eat come to mind.

Start with your backyard - Your patio could be the best spot for all of those reunion lunches and dinners with friends and family. Add some new potted plants, check your barbecue equipment and make sure there is a lot of comfortable seating and umbrellas. Dinners can stretch into evenings with a little guitar music and really great desserts.

Set up some amazing trips - You and your family may be flying for the first time in a while, or you may be driving to Grandma's house for a great reunion. Make sure all of the details are covered so you can just relax and enjoy the time away. Pack light but carefully. If you have small ones, you might consider light backpacks for each to simplify needed essentials.

Head for the water or the hills - Now's the time to enjoy your favorite water sports, do a biking trip or a wilderness hike. Update all of your gear, carry all of the essentials and stay safe as the fun unfolds.

How to Pick the Best Exercises

Wherever your summer plans take you, it's crucial to exercise at least 30 minutes every day to stay in shape. Think about where you will be and insert 10-, 15- or 30-minute exercise routines that you actually enjoy. If you pick the best times, you are much more likely to make them happen.

  • Take that tai chi class in the park
  • Show up for an hour of yoga each week
  • Ride your bike everywhere
  • Try an all-terrain bike with some new trails
  • Use quiet time in the evening for some focused stretching
  • Start running in the early morning or evening
  • Try a new dance class
  • Swim everyday if you can
  • Walk somewhere new each week

What to Eat

Summer can be so tempting to snack constantly, eat lots of burgers, fries and pizza, and top it all off with ice cream or brownies.

Make this summer better with way less junk food and way more fresh vegetables and fruits, sugar-free teas, sodas, fruit juices and sparkling waters. Keep the lean poultry, fresh fish and lean meats coming, along with healthy fiber in black beans, Brussels sprouts, coleslaw, sauerkraut and broccoli.

Pull it together now and enjoy every minute.
