The Cold Needn't Interfere with Good Health

By Tom Herrin

When it comes right down to it, many things are simply a matter of determination and personal decisions.  For those who are intent on working toward maintaining good health everyday, there should be very few setbacks.  For some, the onset of colder temperatures may be considered one of those few exceptions.  Many people have a difficult time dealing with it.  If that is the case, it does not really have to be that way.  Having a plan in mind can make a program of supporting good health a continually enjoyable experience.  There are a few things that should be considered that can help that happen.

Spend Quality Time Warming Up

Just about everyone who engages in any exercise program spends time warming up.  Stretching and doing some kind of lower stress activity can help the blood to reach as many parts of the body as possible.  This will warm those parts and help to prevent injury.  Even though most people do some warm-ups, a lot of them fail to spend nearly enough time doing them.  Whatever time they spend should be lengthened in the cold.

Monitor Breathing

Everyone knows that breathing is essential.  When they are out in the cold and taking in that cold air, people may experience problems such as runny noses and dry, sore throats.  Some of the ways to help avoid this is to inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth.  This can prevent the cold air from entering the mouth and causing dryness.  Exhaling through the mouth can help to keep it warmer and more moist.  Wearing a scarf or mask can allow the air to warm some before entering the nose.

Pay Attention to What You Eat

Many times we eat to be full or stay warm in the cold.  It is pretty easy to fall into this routine.  If we are trying to keep up our conditioning, we need to be sure to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.  Many of them are high in water content, so they can help us to stay hydrated which is a common problem in the cold.  They also contain lots of vitamins and other nutrients.  Be certain you have a good supply of meat or other protein source.  With a little planning, it will all fall into place and yield good results.
