Unlike Day Jobs, Shifts May Pose Health Challenges

By Tom Herrin

When people look for jobs, the odds are that they are thinking in terms of working days and having their evenings and nights free.  This makes it more ideal for most social and family situations.  Unless someone goes into a field in which they know odd schedules are part of it, they may be somewhat surprised when they learn that they will have to alter their sleeping times by more than just a little.  It may sound simple, but when lives are turned upside down due to working shifts, it can also take a toll on health.  Without careful planning, it could turn into bad news gradually over an extended period of time.

Common Health Concerns May Occur More Frequently

Working shifts is more than just moving the alarm.  It is a change in the way people live.  It is anything from sleeping days to being active at night to eating alone much more often than not.  Studies have indicated that many of these workers have increased risks of high blood pressure, heart disease, and other things that are related.  They also have a greater chance of developing diabetes.  No doubt, many fall into some pretty poor eating habits due to the fact that they eat alone and likely depend on vending machines or other types of fast foods.

Some Preventative Measures Are Easy

It is always a task to develop routines for anything.  When people work shifts, unless they have a friend or family member who also does, they can end up flying by the seat of their pants.  That is, they may make decisions about whatever they do on the spur of the moment.  This may mean very random physical activity and eating whenever and wherever.  Making a set time for exercise and establishing a fixed schedule can make it much more effective.  As for meals, eating a minimum of one family meal per day would be a good start.  Making a menu of high quality food could go a long way also.

Find Ways to Socialize

It is pretty easy to sort of disappear from sight when you work shifts.  Too many times, people become almost forgotten.  Even when I have worked late for a few days in a row on a regular basis, it seemed as if my family began to learn to live without me for periods of time.  I ate foods that I could grab in a hurry.  A written plan may seem silly, but it is one of the best ways to keep ourselves on the right track.  Working shifts should not be your undoing, it should be something that improves the quality of life for you and your family.
