Paint Meals for Better Health

By Tom Herrin

When it is time for dinner in some homes, meals look a little like old movies.  They are mostly black and white, or maybe brown and white.  They are still good and have some nutrients, but they may not be quite as healthy as they could be.  For years, lots of people relied on those kinds of meals to provide what they needed for their everyday lives.  There was not a lot of thought given about the relationship between the food that was eaten and what was needed.  One of the easiest ways to make a meal healthier is to add more color.

Greens Are a Must

Most people know that greens are necessary for better health.  If there is a problem, it may be that so many people were told from young ages that they needed to eat their greens.  Too often, it may have seemed like a chore instead of an opportunity.  Greens serve a lot of valuable purposes in a diet.  They may help to increase energy, aid in digestion, and support blood and bone health.  There are some good tasting foods on this list.  It includes kale, broccoli, avocado, kiwi, and green grapes.

Red Makes a Big Impact

Many people rarely eat red foods with the exception of tomatoes.  For many years, they didn't get much attention relating to their ability to ratchet up a meal.  These foods can be served to set off salads, enhance breakfast, as snacks, and as great desserts.  Some of them are believed to help cut the risk of diabetes and heart disease as well as improve the skin.  A few of these foods are beets, strawberries, red onions, cherries, and cranberries.  Adding them to meals can help create a great blend of flavors.

Make Meals Look Like a Picture

When meals are attractively presented, they are more appealing to almost anyone.  As they are filled with more colors, they may become healthier.  This formula is about as simple as it can be.  It can always be fine-tuned a little, but adding color is a good guide.  The more of it that is present, the better it is.  We enjoy trying to make our meals as colorful as possible.  As a result, we have learned to appreciate a greater variety of foods.  I find myself trying more new foods than I ever thought I would.
