Will We Be Able to Make a Good Decision on a Vaccine?
By Tom Herrin
Thanks to the diligent research efforts of many groups and individuals, we have seen the development of vaccines for the current pandemic move at a record pace. Never before have we had the motivation and ability to do so much in so little time. As a result, we have seen the world move from a state of fear to one of greater confidence. With all of this said, we will soon have the opportunity to make a decision for ourselves as to whether or not we will take a vaccine and/or have our family take one. It is no small matter to consider, and careful thought should be given starting now. There is an ample amount of information available to begin thinking about it.
It May Bring Us Peace of Mind
The knowledge that we could be protected from something that has shaken our security and kept us from loved ones is reassuring. The general history of the success of vaccines is plenty of reason to feel good. Vaccines have offered protection from smallpox, measles, mumps, polio, tetanus, diphtheria, and many forms of influenza and other diseases. Because of good vaccines, we have been able to go about our lives with confidence. There is every reason to believe these will be every bit as effective.
It May Bring New Fears
Some vaccines have had questionable results. Some individuals have had immune responses that have been less than pleasant. Some of the reactions have been soreness, fever, disrupted sleep, damage to hearing or vision, seizures, and many others. A few people have had long term conditions that have been unpleasant as a result of vaccinations. The thought of rushing into something that seems new and relatively untested, over a long period of time, is more than a little scary for some.
We Each Have Much to Ponder
The decision of whether or not to take a vaccine is something we must take seriously. We must consider our own, and our family's, history with vaccines. We must look at the possible risks, but we have to look at the odds. Are our chances greater of getting the virus and having serious consequences or are they greater of having an unfavorable reaction to a vaccine. Only we can decide, and it is a big decision not to be taken lightly. Our job is to study now and be ready to decide when the time comes.
