Shower Your Heart With Love

By Donna Stark

You spend a lot of time thanking people for making your life easier, but do you ever take the time to thank your heart? That's right. Your heart works nonstop, every day of every week of every year to keep your body running, and if anything deserves some time off, it's that. Unfortunately you can't give your heart a vacation for all the work it does, but there are some ways to show how much you appreciate it. By making some smart and simple changes to your daily lifestyle, you can help it stay strong and healthy. Take a look at the following suggestions.

Start Moving

Find something to do every day that will raise your heart rate and get your blood pumping faster! Just 30 minutes of moderate exercise each day can have a significant impact on your heart health. So, add a walk to your morning routine, climb several flights of stairs while at work, or take your children for a bike ride after school. These little bits of movement count and can easily add up!

Eat a Bowl of Oats

Instead of reaching for that cinnamon roll or those chocolate cookies in the cookie jar, make yourself a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast every morning. The fiber in the oats helps to lower cholesterol and if you add some fresh berries on top, you'll be giving yourself an extra dose of antioxidants.

Reduce Your Stress

You are always going to compete with the things that want to stress you out, so be prepared to face them and win! Experiment with different stress management techniques and find the ones that you like the most. You can try things like breathing exercises, meditation, or journaling. You can also reach out to a trusted friend or family member to talk about what you are going through. The key idea here is to find the techniques that will reduce most of your stress.

Get Your Sleep

Sleep deprivation and an inconsistent sleep routine can lead to weight gain, increased stress, and higher blood pressure levels. Make sure you are giving your body at least seven hours of sleep each night (or more if your body needs it) and commit to a healthy bedtime routine. Wake up and go to sleep at the same times each morning and night, too.

Don't Wait

Don't wait until it's too late to make these simple changes in your life. Show your heart how much you appreciate its hard work by taking care of it every single day. It will definitely return the favor if you do so!
