Ease Your Waking Pain With These Tips
By Brandi Goodman
Waking up and getting out of bed in the morning can be a major struggle. It may not even be because you're still tired and just don't want to. Many people wake up feeling incredibly stiff and sore, making it hard to get up and move around without wincing. With some tips in mind, you can ease your waking pain and have an easier morning.
Get a New Pillow
Did you know you were supposed to be exchanging your pillow every two years max? One to two years is the recommendation from sleep experts. A flattened pillow won't do you any good. If you notice you wake up daily with pain in your neck or shoulders, it may be time to dump the pillow you have and get one with better support.
Upgrade Your Mattress
If a new pillow doesn't do the trick, or it's other parts of your body that are feeling sore upon waking, your mattress may be the problem. Ten years is about the maximum time-frame for keeping one mattress. You may only get eight out of one, though, especially if it's getting worn out and damaged from use. Upgrade your mattress to one with the right firmness level for your body and see if your waking pain dissipates.
Switch Your Sleeping Position
The position you sleep in could also be the culprit of your discomfort. Doctors do not recommend sleeping on your stomach because it puts your spine out of alignment. Sleeping on your back or side with a pillow under or between your knees is the latest recommendation for adequate spinal support and optimal comfort.
Start With In-Bed Stretches
Don't step out of bed the second you open your eyes. You may be uneasy on your feet with a sore body that just slept stiffly. Instead, start with some in-bed stretches that can help to loosen up your limbs and allow you to get up and move a bit easier. Reach your toes as far toward the end of your bed as possible. Lift one leg and hold for a few seconds before lowering it back down, repeating on the opposite side after. Reach your arms straight up in the air. Even simple stretches like these can be enough to help.
Pain immediately upon waking shouldn't be the norm. Do what you can to prevent this discomfort by keeping these tips in mind. A better start to your day can set the tone for the full morning, afternoon, and evening. You'll be better prepared to make it through your day if it starts off right -- no pain included.
