These 4 Mistakes Will Inhibit Marathon Recovery Time

By Brandi Swieter

Runners often spend months preparing for a marathon, doing everything they can to get ready for the big race. They run laps, stretch, eat healthy, and time their laps. Many put so much focus on the preparation for the race that they forget all about the recovery process afterward. Forgetting to think about what to do once the marathon is over can help to inhibit marathon recovery time and be harmful to the body. Four mistakes often get made during this recovery period.

Taking  a Cold Shower

It’s tempting to immediately go home and jump into a cold shower after a long race. Runners want a way to cool down while also getting some time to relax their bodies. Taking a cold shower only is the number one mistake people make for their recovery. The muscles are sore and tired after a big race. A contrast shower is the best option to help the legs get ideal blood flow and oxygen circulating through. Start with one minute of hot water flowing down, and then alternate to a minute of cold water. Repeat several times until the muscles feel relaxed and rejuvenated.

Eating Junk Food

So the race is over and a long time awaits between the next event. Since the racers spent the last several months watching what they eat, many feel they can now binge on junk food and eat anything they desire. This way of thinking is far from accurate. Junk food should still be avoided, at least while the body is in recovery mode. It needs to get fueled with protein, veggies, and fruit so it can handle the healing process more quickly.

Taking Time Off

After months preparing, many racers want to take time off from working out. They feel they should get adequate rest during their off time before they get back into the swing of things again. While rest is important, taking time off completely is not the answer. Runners should still go out the next day and at least go for a walk or light jog. It will get the blood flowing and ensure a quicker recovery time.

Handling the Recovery Alone

Too many people train hard, run races, and spend their recovery time handling things alone. It is always best to seek the help of a professional after a hard race, such as a marathon. The body can get misaligned and put out of shape by putting too much strain on one particular side of the body. A doctor of chiropractic or physical therapist can help to restore the body to its proper alignment. Be sure to visit The Joint Chiropractic within a few days after finishing your marathon to help with healing. Importantly, be sure to visit The Joint before the race to ensure optimal mechanical condition before embarking on your marathon quest.
