4 Methods for Improving Hearing and Speech
By Brandi Goodman
Better Hearing and Speech Month in May encourages people to learn about communication disorders. Some people cannot speak or hear because of an illness or disorder that has made it so. However, that does not mean there are no ways to make improvements. Certain methods help to make hearing and speech better so even those who struggle to hear or speak can do so a little easier.
Wear Hearing Protection in Loud Venues
Loud venues, such as concerts, truck shows, firework shows, and even construction sites can all be cause for concern when it comes to the ears. Excessive noise can cause damage to hearing and prevent people from hearing as well, if at all. It is important to wear hearing protection, such as using ear plugs or a pair of noise cancelling headphones that can drown out some of the noise around you.
Avoid Using Cotton Swabs
Cotton swabs intended for cleaning the ears should not actually be used. Many people use them incorrectly, causing pain to their ears rather than just cleaning them. An excessive build-up of earwax should only be removed by a doctor. Otherwise, it is not really necessary to clean them out at all. If you do wish to still swab your ears, use a wet washcloth and just wipe out the outer portion without sticking anything into the ear canal.
Consume Foods That Boost Ear Health
You may not think that diet could do much good for your hearing, but the truth of the matter is that it can. Certain foods can help to improve the health of your ears. You just need the right nutrients. Consume foods that are rich in potassium, folic acid, magnesium, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, and Vitamin D. Salmon, almonds, chicken, beans, broccoli, bananas, spinach, yogurt, and low-fat milk should all be on your menu.
Stay Hydrated
Poor hydration can do a lot to our voices. If the vocal cords are not adequately hydrated they have the potential to stop working well. You may sound coarse, quiet, or even struggle to speak at all if you have not had enough water to drink. Drink plenty of water each day and keep your voice strong.
With a little help, people can make improvements to their speech and hearing. Several methods exist for making this happen, yet many people are often unaware of just how to utilize them. Follow these tips and see if you can't make your hearing or speech better over time.
